Little is understood about the behavior, location, and habitat preferences of juvenile Gulf sturgeon. To learn more about this prehistoric fish, the Florida Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Florida, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are studying Gulf sturgeon in the Choctawhatchee River, one of seven freshwater systems stretching from the Pearl River in Louisiana to the Suwannee River in Florida.

While other birds migrate north to nest, these hawks soar south
As spring arrives in the Northern Hemisphere, thousands of birds pepper the sky, traveling north to mate, but Israeli and U.S. scientists recently discovered for the first time a bird that does the opposite. They found that the long-legged buzzard migrates south to nest and then journeys north. This discovery “doesn’t suit the common breeding knowledge that everybody knows,” says lead author and ecologist Guilad Friedemann.

Philipp Maleko is a master’s student in interdisciplinary ecology with the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). In summer 2019, Maleko was a member of a research team that discovered the nest of an endangered Russian shorebird, the Nordmann’s greenshank. Up until that point, no one had seen a nest of this species in more than 40 years.

The first third of this 15.1-mile route traces Kittatinny Ridge, which thousands of birds of prey use as a guideline when migrating south.
